To mark the opening of 1 Hotel Tokyo, the brand’s first property in Japan, Eightmedia reached out to Sensu Studio to support the production of a short-form film created as part of 1 Hotels’ “Meet the Makers” series. The series explores the people, craftsmanship, and ideas behind the brand’s properties, connecting the stories of the makers and designers to 1 Hotels’ focus on nature, design, sustainability, and a deeper sense of place.
For the Tokyo chapter, the film follows architect Jun Aizaki, founder of New York-based creative design studio CRÈME, whose work shaped the design of 1 Hotel Tokyo. Produced across New York and Tokyo, the film combines footage from both locations, with Sensu Studio responsible for capturing the Tokyo portion of the story.
From the signature Oya stone in the lobby and handmade ceramic lighting to the lounge, bar, restaurant, and guest rooms, the production focused on the details that communicate the hotel's nature-led and biophilic design philosophy. Alongside the video production, Sensu Studio also captured still photography of Jun and the hotel interiors. The photography was used as part of the final film, complementing the moving image and helping to visually connect the architect's original concepts with the completed spaces.
The production took place shortly before the hotel’s official opening, while the property was still preparing to welcome its first guests. Working within an active pre-opening environment required flexibility and careful coordination on location, with the team adapting to the evolving spaces and conditions to capture the hotel at its best.
The finished video offered audiences a closer look at the people and ideas behind 1 Hotel Tokyo, introducing the brand's first property in Japan through the story of its architect and the spaces he helped create. Since its release, the video has reached more than 347,000 views on Instagram, bringing the story of the new property and its design to a global audience.
